Ariel 1928 “5.5 HP Standard Side Valve Model A” 557 cc frame # W2284 engine # W1836

The new line of Ariels, introduced at the end of 1925 and designed by engineering genius Val Page, had been an instant success. Not so much because of its technical innovations, but mostly for its very attractive styling: lower saddle position, shortened wheel base and high saddle tank. Victor Mole was the new man in charge of sales at the Ariel works and he designed the new eye-catching emblem of the Ariel horse and coined the advertising slogan “Ariel, the Modern Motor Cycle”. Within a few years Ariel sales and profits rocketed. In 1927 sales were ten times as high as the 1925 sales before the introduction of the new line of machines. The range was quite transparent: five models were offered, A and B being 557 cc side valves, and D,E, and F 497 cc OHV machines. New features for 1927 were a new frame and the placing of the magneto behind the cylinder. For model year 1928 no less than 32 new features were announced. Some notable ones were: new fishtail-type exhaust, wider front forks and mudguards, improved and strengthened frame and detachable dome on primary chain case for easy access of clutch. By 1928 the new line of Ariels has matured: any previous weaknesses had been ironed out and the machines had become very reliable and strong with plenty of performance. A notable feature of the Model A is the sturdy Sturmey-Archer gearbox: all other models were equipped with Burman boxes. In the Ariel book “The Black Ariels, 1926-1930” we read: “Many vintagents regard the Sturmey-Archer to be a better gearbox than the Burman and it’s considered by many to be easier to use, make easier and faster shifts and it seems to be a sweeter box.
The machine on offer is a matured older restoration. She was imported in the 1970s from the Czech Republic into The Netherlands and has given the former owner lots of pleasure in vintage rallies till recently. She comes with Bosch ignition and lighting, two leather bags, tyre pump and bulb horn.
